Can I change my credit card account number?

When your issuer needs to change your credit card number, they’ll send you a replacement card with a new number. It’s linked to the same account you’ve been using all along. Nothing on your credit report will change in any way that would affect your score: The old card isn’t reported as a closed account.

What happens when you change your credit card number?

As many people have found out the hard way, getting a new credit card number does not necessarily clean the slate from recurring charges or keep merchants from billing you again. Sometimes it works – but you can’t count on it. The fact that the account has a new number doesn’t change that.
