Can I use a plasma cutter to weld?

By Alexander Torres

With no iron-oxygen reaction, plasma cutting these metals relies solely on heat transfer from the plasma arc to the work. With the right torch design, a nitrogen-water injection, less expensive than other gases, can work well when plasma cutting aluminum and stainless material for subsequent welding.

Can you convert a stick welder to a plasma cutter?

Plasma cutters are becoming the tool of choice for cutting metal. However, if you don’t make tons of cuts and don’t want to invest in a plasma or oxy setup, you can adapt your arc welder to make plasma-like cuts. It’s not technically a plasma cut, but the air arc cut it produces mimics the plasma cut.

Where should a welder avoid using the plasma cutter?

Avoid plasma arc cutting use in areas which house chlorinated solvents and cleaners. 10. Never touch any parts on the plasma arc cutter that are electrically connected. The plasma arc cutter uses high amperage and produces high voltage which can cause severe or fatal electrical shock.

Will a plasma cutter burn your eyes like a welder?

Plasma cutting arcs can also be very intense, because the arc current is typically anywhere from 100 to 800 Amperes. Needless to say, looking at an arc that intense can easily cause eye damage, including permanent damage leading to blindness.

Do you need a welding helmet for plasma cutting?

Safety is of utmost priority when performing plasma cutting. You need to shield your eyes and face with proper plasma cutting glasses, goggles, and/or helmet. You also need to wear a welding gloves, welding jacket, or any clothing that is flame-resistant just like denim.

Can a MIG welder be converted to a plasma cutter?

A MIG welder can be used as a plasma cutter. You’ll need an air compressor and carbon electrode in place of wire along with a number of small items.

What is the difference between a plasma cutter and a welder?

Some welding machines catch flames very quickly while cutting but with plasma cutter you can be tension free. While working with plasma cutter, work in an open or ventilated place because it produces toxin flumes which are dangerous for your health. The metals cut by this machine needs more voltage supply for cutting.

What gas do you need for a plasma cutter?

Argon-Hydrogen is required for mechanized cutting of any material more than 3 inches thick. This mixture also provides an excellent gas for plasma gouging on all materials.

Should you wear eye protection when using a plasma cutter?

How serious a risk does plasma cutting pose to vision? On a scale of 1-10, about a 10-and-a-half. Exposure to light from the plasma arc can easily cause macular degeneration, retinal detachment and permanent blindness. You absolutely need eye protection, and we’d go one step further and recommend full face protection.

Do you need eye protection when using a plasma cutter?

Can you get arc eye from a plasma cutter?

Do you need a air compressor for a plasma cutter?

All plasma manufacturers include minimum air flow and pressure requirements in the owner’s manual. If you do a lot of cutting, or plan to cut thick plate, we recommend using a compressor that is 1.5 to 2 times the plasma system requirement.

What’s the difference between a plasma cutter and a welder?

Is a plasma cutter the same as a welder?

The plasma cutter is also almost ten times faster than MIG welder, and it is effective in cutting thin and thick metals alike. A hand-held plasma cutter can be used to cut up to a 1.5-inch thick steel plate.

Can I use my MIG welder as a plasma cutter?

A MIG welder can be used as a plasma cutter. You’ll need an air compressor and carbon electrode in place of wire along with a number of small items. Keep the amperage between 25 and 50 and increase the wire feed speed. Avoid CO2 and choose air or nitrogen.

Do you need to wear a mask when using a plasma cutter?

Technically, no, you do not. Many people tend to wear goggles when it comes to plasma cutting or even safety glasses that darken. However, if the torch you are using has enough amps to it, then a welding mask would be ideal for safety reasons.

Should you wear a welding mask for plasma cutting?

With these considerations in mind, how can a CNC plasma operator wear glasses as dark as a welder’s shield and still see enough to get anything done? Obviously, if you were to operate an 800 Amp plasma torch at the same distance as a typical welding torch, you would need a welding helmet for protection.

Plasma arc cutting makes use of higher velocity comparatively to that of the PAW. Whereas in the plasma arc welding the plasma is forced through a fine-bore copper nozzle which squeezes the arc and the plasma egresses the orifice at high velocities at a temperature approaching 20,000 °C.

One of the many purposes of wearing safety glasses or goggles when plasma cutting is to protect your eyes from radiation and UV rays. Proper plasma safety requires protecting your eyes, face, and your exposed skin. You need to shield your eyes and face with proper plasma cutting glasses, goggles, and/or helmet.

Can a plasma cutter be used as a welder?

You’ll have DC/AC Tig and SMAW (stick) with plasma cutter for the price of a good separate cutter. The machine has stable TIG arc. Included water cooled TIG torch is a little heavy, but allows weld at high amp range for a long time. And you have an option to downgrade/sidegrade to a smaller torch.

Do you need Tig, stick, stick or plasma cutter?

As a result, surrounding area warps less. Some welders always prefer to have a separate unit dedicated to an each task. Having separate TIG, stick welders and plasma cutter will ensure that if even one unit breaks, they can still get jobs done.

How big is a Lotos plasma welding machine?

Lotos CT520D 50 AMP Air Plasma Cutter, 200 AMP Tig and Stick/MMA/ARC Welder 3 in 1 Combo Welding Machine, ½ Inch Clean Cut, Brown Plasma cutting torch 50 A, 12.5 ft. TIG welding torch 200 A 12.9 ft.

Are there any Plasma cutters from Everlast?

The all new PowerPro and PowerUltra line of multi-process TIG/ Stick/ Plasma Cutter units from Everlast has been created to fill the huge market gap in affordable multiprocess units that handle both welding and cutting.
