Can I write off personal vehicle for work?

Individuals who own a business or are self-employed and use their vehicle for business may deduct car expenses on their tax return. If a taxpayer uses the car for both business and personal purposes, the expenses must be split. The deduction is based on the portion of mileage used for business.

Does social domestic pleasure and commuting include business use?

Social, domestic and pleasure only (SDP) This use will cover the regular driver and any named drivers to use the vehicle solely for social, domestic and pleasure use. This excludes any travel to and from work or business use.

How are personal commuting miles treated by the IRS?

Mileage between the last worksite of the day and home is treated as personal commuting miles. However, if the employee drives directly from home to a temporary worksite outside the metropolitan area where the employee resides, then the mileage between the employee’s home and the temporary worksite is treated as business miles.
