Regardless of whether you’re a minister performing ministerial services as an employee or a self-employed person, all of your earnings, including wages, offerings, and fees you receive for performing marriages, baptisms, funerals, etc., are subject to income tax.

Does a minister get a W-2?

Churches should issue a Form W-2, not a Form 1099,to minister employees. As explained earlier, ministers often have a dual tax status and will pay SECA taxes on their ministerial earnings, but most ministers should file their tax returns as employees and should receive a Form W-2from their church.

Where is minister housing allowance on w2?

Generally, the housing allowance is reported in box 14 of the W-2 and is not included in boxes 1, 3 or 5. The fair rental value of a parsonage or the housing allowance can be excluded from income only for income tax purposes.

Do you need a W2 if you are a pastor?

Clergy are considered self-employed for certain tax purposes and are responsible for paying their own SE and income tax, but if you answer to a board, the congregation or denomination then you are a common law employee for most other legal purposes and should receive a W-2.

Do you have to file taxes as a clergy member?

Members of the Clergy. For services in the exercise of the ministry, members of the clergy receive a Form W-2 but do not have social security or Medicare taxes withheld.

What should I check on my W2 for clergy?

Check the box for religious wages. If you have zero housing allowance, it doesn’t matter if you enter expenses, since housing expenses are not deductible for clergy and entering them will change nothing. (Clergy housing can be excluded if a proper housing allowance is in place but that is not the same as a deduction.)

Can you file a W2 with no wages?

Box 2 has the federal tax withheld. Turbotax will not let me submit a W2 that has federal tax withheld that is more than the wages. What is the correct way to report the HA? Should we not be doing a W2 and just do a 1099mis? How to I report the federal tax I had withheld in 2018? My wife and I both have other jobs which we have W2s for.
