If your actual income for the year ends up being more than you projected when you enrolled, you might have to pay back part or all of your health insurance premium subsidy when you file your taxes. For 2020, people do not have to repay any excess APCT, thanks to the American Rescue Plan (ARP).

You can avoid having to repay your ACA subsidies by letting your health exchange know about any changes in your income or family composition during the year. This way, your subsidies can be adjusted during the year to reflect your actual income.

What is the cutoff for healthcare subsidy?

You can qualify for a subsidy if you make up to four times the Federal Poverty Level. That’s about $47,000 for an individual and $97,000 for a family of four. If you’re an individual who makes about $29,000 or less, or a family of four that makes about $60,000 or less, you may qualify for both subsidies.

There’s no added penalty for taking extra subsidies. The difference will be reflected in your tax payment or refund. (You can instead pay your monthly premiums in full, then receive your accurate subsidy in your tax refund.
