Do sole traders need to be GST registered?

Do I need to be registered as a company to be GST-registered? No. You can register for GST as an individual contractor, freelancer or sole trader – there is no need to register a company with the Companies Office. As an individual you can raise the same business expenses as a registered company would.

Can a sole trader charge GST if not registered?

Only entities registered for GST can charge GST for goods and services on a tax invoices. If you’ve searched their details on ABN lookup and it states they aren’t registered for GST, you should be requesting a revised tax invoice.

What happens if I’m not registered for GST?

If you don’t register for GST and are required to, you may have to pay GST on sales made since the date you were required to register. This could happen even if you didn’t include GST in the price of those sales. You may also have to pay penalties and interest.
