Do you plan to claim dependents on your tax return?

When you prepare your federal income tax return, it’s likely you want to seek every possible deduction to reduce the amount of tax you owe. One way to do this is by claiming your children and other qualifying relatives as dependents. Each dependent claimed lowers your total taxable income by one exemption.

Can I claim my 17 year old brother as a dependent?

You must have a qualifying relationship with your would-be dependent. Your adult son and/or daughter might also qualify as your dependent if you continue to support them—they’re just no longer your “qualifying children” if older than age 19, or age 24 if they’re students.
