How much taxes do you pay on a death benefit?

Generally speaking, when the beneficiary of a life insurance policy receives the death benefit, this money is not counted as taxable income, and the beneficiary does not have to pay taxes on it.

IMRF is required by federal tax law to withhold 20% of the taxable portion of the lump sum benefit paid. The beneficiary can avoid the 20% withholding by electing to have the taxable portion directly transferred to an account as a qualifying rollover.

Who can receive a death benefit pension?

However certain beneficiaries may be able to choose to receive some or all of your super as a death benefit pension instead. Those eligible to be paid a death benefit pension includes your spouse, a child under 18, child age 18 – 25 who is financially dependent upon you or a disabled child.

When is a death benefit not taxable in Canada?

A death benefit will generally not be taxable if the recipient is not a beneficiary of the estate, and all of the following circumstances apply: the taxpayer who received the death benefit paid the deceased’s funeral expenses the amount of the death benefit is not more than the funeral expenses
