What expenses can a driving instructor claim?

The following list is not exhaustive but gives an indication of the general expenses that can be claimed by a driving instructor:

  • Motor fuel.
  • Parking and tolls.
  • Car cleaning.
  • Franchise fee.
  • Postage & stationary.
  • Computer consumables.
  • Continuing professional education (not initial training costs*).

Can driving instructors teach you in your own car?

You can also get your instructor to teach you in your own car. Have them meet you at your house and set off for the lesson in your car instead of theirs. The lesson won’t be any cheaper, and they may ask for proof of your insurance so be sure to have your Certificate of Insurance to hand.

Do I have to pay to use my instructors car?

If you want to use your instructor’s car for your test then you have to pay your instructor as well, just as if it were a normal driving lesson. That’s an extra £20-25 to account for. Then if you want your ‘practice’ lesson before your test, that’s another hour.

Can you expense driving lessons?

Driving lessons would be a difficult expense to justify. They are generally a personal expense so you will need a lot of evidence to demonstrate that they are both a necessity and for the sole purpose of your business.

Why do driving instructors charge so much?

You CAN claim on your expenses for further training & if the car is for sole business use you can claim for them too – if you plan to be mobile and driving is imperitive then I suppose the driving lessons could be claimed for too. To be sure ring HMRC and ask them, they are really helpfull.

Your expenses on medium rigid driver’s licence and associated training course are deductible if your employer requires you to obtain this licence as part of your existing employment and your employer does not reimburse you for these expenses.

What kind of taxes do you pay as a driving instructor?

There are harsh rules about what training costs can be offset for tax purposes if they are for the proprietor. Unfortunately the initial training fees to become a qualified Driving Instructor are not allowable.

Please Note : If you use your vehicle for your own personal use then you need to factor this in when any expenses are claimed. For example if you calculate that you use your vehicle 20% of the time for personal or family use, then you would need to reduce any relevant vehicle running expenses by 20%.
