What happens to your retirement if you leave teaching?

When a teacher retires, he or she receives a regular payment (an annuity) for life, with the amount determined by a formula, usually based on years of teaching and final salary. Teachers who quit too early to benefit can get a refund of what they contributed but usually not of the employer contribution.

Can retired teachers sub in Michigan?

You may continue to collect your pension and receive the insurance premium subsidy if you’re not performing a core service. You can work as a substitute teacher if your retirement effective date is between July 1, 2010 and September 1, 2015. You can earn up to one-third of your final average compensation.
