You are likely to experience a wide range of emotions from the time your child is diagnosed with cancer, throughout treatment and beyond. These emotions may include shock, denial, fear, anger, guilt and sadness. You may feel that life for your child and family will never be the same.

What do you do when a family member is diagnosed with cancer?

Here are some tips for being as supportive as possible when a loved one is diagnosed with cancer:

  1. Listen.
  2. Give advice only when you are asked.
  3. Educate yourself about cancer.
  4. Support your loved one’s treatment decisions.
  5. Remember the caregiver.
  6. Stay connected.
  7. Keep things normal.

Can you get life insurance on someone with cancer?

Once your cancer has been cured, most life insurance companies will approve any policy, with limited restrictions. Cancer survivors can purchase life insurance from any company, but keep in mind that you will still pay an above-average premium because cancer is considered to be a pre-existing condition.

Every parent copes differently, but many parents say it is hard to hear apologies from friends or family in response to caring for a child with cancer. Instead, focus on the positive statements such as, “we are in this with you. Whatever you need, we’re here.”
