What if every US House had solar panels?

By Matthew Martinez

We said earlier that if every home in California was equipped with solar panels, the state could generate about three quarters of its energy from solar power. But following the same initiative, a state like Wyoming, for example, would only be able to get about 14% of its energy from solar power.

Are solar panels bad for your house?

Solar panels may not produce as much energy as traditional power sources, but you can’t point those other sources at the sun and get free electricity either. Solar panels aren’t dangerous; they can’t explode when you drop them and they can’t set your house on fire.

What would happen if everyone switched to solar?

Widespread installation of solar panels would decrease absorption of solar radiation by up to 19% in desert areas, the researchers found. In turn, this has cascading effects on the climate. Desert precipitation could also decrease by over 20%, largely because the presence of solar panels also reduces cloud cover.

How are solar panels installed on a house?

The solar company installs solar panels on a home for little or no upfront cost, and the homeowner signs an agreement with the solar company to purchase electricity at some rate that should be lower than the utility rate. This is the most complicated situation, and requires the prospective homebuyer to be careful.

Is it worth it to buy solar panels for your home?

Buying a solar energy system will likely increase your home’s value. A recent study found that solar panels are viewed as upgrades, just like a renovated kitchen or a finished basement, and home buyers across the country have been willing to pay a premium of about $15,000 for a home with an average-sized solar array.

Do you have to own your home to get solar power?

You should also consider the age of your roof and how long until it will need replacement. If a solar professional determines that your roof is not suitable for solar, or you don’t own your home, you can still benefit from solar energy.

Which is the best location for a solar powered home?

The first consideration is the solar irradiation levels available in the home’s geographical location. When it comes to using solar panels, being closer to the equator is generally better, but other factors must be considered.
