What are the benefits of donating a car?

By Mia Moss

One of the biggest benefits of donating your car is that you might be able to get a pretty sweet tax deduction. But just like anything else the IRS controls, it’s not as simple as handing the car over to a charity and then deducting its value from your taxable income.

Car donors can claim a tax deduction of the vehicle’s fair market value under these following situations:

  • The non-profit charitable organization makes certain use of the car in charitable deeds.
  • The charitable organization increases the value of the vehicle significantly through repairs (not just cleaning or painting).

Can a car be donated to a charity?

Before you donate your car, be sure to take pictures of the vehicle condition just in case you need to verify its value. Once you have submitted your car donation form and title paperwork, most car donation charities will pick the car up. This saves you the hassle of moving the car, particularly if it is a junk car.

What should I fill out to donate my car?

For example, if your car is valued at more than $500, you should fill out and include Form 8283 Part A in your tax returns. If your car is valued at more than $5,000, you should fill out Part B of that form instead. Before you donate your car, be sure to take pictures of the vehicle condition just in case you need to verify its value.

How does the Car Talk Car Donation Program work?

The Car Talk Vehicle Donation Program allows you to donate your car to your local NPR station. The station will then sell the car for an average 65 percent profit, making it one of the more efficient car donation programs nationally. Your local NPR station will receive the profits, and you get a tax write-off for the profit from your car donation.

Is there a tax deduction for donating a car?

You could itemize even if the donated auto is your only deduction, but that’s usually not the best choice. Here’s the math: Suppose you’re in the 28 percent tax bracket and the allowable deduction for the vehicle donation is $1,000.
